Merry's Musings

My books have saved me. I love Paranormal Romance, Science Fiction Romance, Urban Fantasy and Dystopia.

Unearthed (UN-Forgettable #1) - C.J. Barry My only slight gripe with this book is that it could have been much longer with all the awesome original ideas and characters C.J. Barry has packed into this deliciously exciting and sexy story. (I want a Pitz of my own...but I'd settle for Cohl.)

Undone Deeds - Mark Del Franco I love this series and I'm in love with Connor Grey. But to end a series with a book that seemed to me to be so disconnected from the previous books and to end the way it did has led to the HUGEST disappointment I've ever felt after having such amazing characters in my life for so long.

I HATE endings like this at the best of times. The last part of the book was just plain confusing for me. I actually skipped parts of it to get to something I could understand and relate back to Connor, Leo, Meryl and the other characters I'd grown so attached to. This book seemed to deviate very quickly from a true urban fantasy, which was the overall strength of the series IMO, to encompass a mish mash of fairy, mythology and everything in between. I wasn't expecting a mushy HEA, but I'm afraid I just didn't get the ending.
The Better to Hold You - Alisa Sheckley I'll review this book by responding to the negative reviews and just say that you can't have kick-ass heroines all the time.

I liked this book precisely because Abra was NOT. The foundation of this paranormal romance (and, yes, it IS a paranormal romance) of subjugated female really intrigued me because, 1. it's fairly unusual in PNR fiction and therefore refreshing, and 2. it resonates with an all too frequent scenario (without the paranormal elements) in real life, which makes it relatable. How often does that happen in PNR?

Abra DID escape that seemingly never-ending cycle and found her perfect soul mate and lover in Red.

And, well, Red isn't exactly your archetypal alpha male either, is he? His affinity with animals (OK, I'm a bit biased: I love owls) was heartening and the fact that although he was pretty damn hot, he wasn't perfect. I loved the way he cared about Abra without all the he-man baggage.

I'm really looking forward to being back with Abra and Red, and to further explore the fascinating Northside, in Moon Burn.

Guardian Cats and the Lost Books of Alexandria

Guardian Cats and the Lost Books of Alexandria - Rahma Krambo For those who love cats and books, this is an endearing story with some characters and ideals that will stay with you after it ends.

Pour

Pour - Taylor Napolsky This short story's premise is intriguing and very original. I really enjoyed it, but was left wondering how and why, which ultimately led to some disappointment. I hope the author will pursue this amazing idea further.
City of the Falling Sky (The Seckry Sequence, #1) - Joseph Evans Breathtakingly original. A revelation on almost every page. Exciting and engaging blend of the usual teenaged angst and everyday life with a mesmerising array of fantastic images and events from Joseph Evans' marvelously imagined and realised world. I can't wait to connect with Seckry and his friends again. READ THIS BOOK!
Old Haunts: A London City Novel - Emmett Spain I can't think of anything I didn't like about this book. It contains so much that I love, so it didn't bother me that it covers familiar ground. It is a very busy story, but I think the author weaved it all together very skillfully. There were enough original touches and interesting characters to capture and sustain my attention in what I hope will become a series, perhaps with some more back story about London City.

The action was exciting and unrelenting. I really appreciated that the author didn't come up with easy solutions to challenging situations and made his protagonists work hard.

An excellent debut and highly recommended.
Diamond Eyes - A.A. Bell Slow and gentle for 3/4 of the book, getting to know Mira and Ben, and learning to really like them a lot, building up to a very satisfying ending. I can understand some readers' frustration at the lack of action throughout the majority of the book, but I think there were enough tantalising hints of what was to come to sustain engagement with the very likeable protagonists and their poignant connection.
